2014 Land Rover Range Rover Review
The fourth generation of the classic Range Rover, which will again come with four passenger portals and a split tailgate. Even though the Range Rover was launched more than forty years ago as a two-door SUV, this basic configuration has become the norm ever since Swiss automaker Monteverdi came up with this design in the early 1980s, which was subsequently sold to the Brits.
The Range Rover is the quintessential luxury SUV, and it easily could have the most favorable demographics of any SUV on the road—excepting, perhaps, the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen.
While the current Range Rover shares its basic architecture with the first-generation BMW X5, the fourth-generation features a standalone platform that shares a number of components with Jaguar. Jaguar/Land Rover will use a lot of aluminum to keep weight down—it’s possible the 2014 model could weigh 1000 pounds less than the current iteration. There will be very little commonality with the current model, or with the LR4 and its Range Rover Sport sibling. The new Range Rover will be full of technology, including cutting-edge telematics and assistance systems.
Land Rover aims to take its powertrain technology to a new level. A hybrid will come in 2013, and a plug-in hybrid—which could be diesel-powered—in 2015. Further up the range, there will be six- and likely still eight-cylinder engines. Efficiency is high on the list of priorities here.
Estimated Arrival and Price: The next Range Rover will be unveiled at the Paris auto show in late September, arriving in the U.S. by mid-2013. Prices will start north of $80,000 and will extend well into six figures.
